The Enoden, a tram over a hundred years old that links Kamakura and Fujisawa, and within it the quietest, most serene Gokurakuji Station. The single-track platform, the weathered station building, and the single-car tram passing slowly beside it create a mood that becomes the backdrop for the two leads brushing past each other and exchanging their final goodbye. Narrow alleys and temples continue around the station, so just stepping off the tram and walking lets you feel as if you've entered one of the show's frames.
Goryo Shrine, a Kamakura landmark set right beside the Enoden tracks so that tram and shrine fit in one frame. The view of the tram passing beyond the torii gate is famous as a photo spot, and in the show it becomes the backdrop for the warm scene where Ho-jin invites Mu-hee to share the dinner handed to him by an Italian couple. The grounds are small and quiet, so rather than lingering, it suits a route of catching one shot timed to the tram and walking on slowly to the nearby shore.
Sanmeru Farm, set in the Sanmeru village of Paju's Jeokseong-myeon, where the Imjin River flows and Gamaksan rises. This winery, which makes wine from wild grapes it grows itself, is disguised in the show as an Italian winery, becoming the backdrop for the scene where Mu-hee and Ho-jin share their hearts over wine. Book ahead and you can enjoy a winery tour and a wine-making experience — for viewers who can't follow every overseas location, it's the closest place to borrow the show's Italian mood.
Upper Kananaskis Lake Kananaskis Country Alberta Canada
Upper Kananaskis Lake, set in Kananaskis Country in the Canadian Rockies. The snow peaks ringing it on every side, the lake calm as a mirror, and the aurora that embroiders the sky at night become the stage for the drama's most striking climax. The moment the two look up at the aurora together was filmed here. It's within driving distance of Banff and Canmore, so it ties nicely into a Rockies itinerary — but the altitude is high and the nights are cold, so it's best to prepare thoroughly for the cold.
