一名無業的作家苗子以尋找素材為由，在倫敦街頭尾隨陌生人，直到某天被自己跟蹤的男人當場逮住。他隨對方潛入他人住所、翻看別人的生活，越陷越深，而被打亂順序的片段直到最後一刻才拼成一條完整的線。這是諾蘭與朋友利用週末以16mm黑白膠片拍成的長片處女作。
預算只有六千英鎊，自然談不上搭景。銀幕上的倫敦就是諾蘭當年生活的街區，蘇活區與柯芬園的窄巷即是舞台。今天走進去，巷子的寬度與招牌的高度幾乎沒變，黑白畫面裡的那些角度仍能在路上一一對上。
