The sky opens wide above the rounded royal tombs, so the frame never feels empty even with the figures placed small. In spring the cherry blossoms along the wall path and the magnolia photo spot draw crowds, which makes early morning the easier visit.

An observatory from a thousand years ago, within walking distance of Daereungwon. The ground around it is entirely flat, so the tower stands out clearly from any angle, and the show uses it as the single shot that explains Gyeongju. Lighting comes on around sunset, and the night view is the more striking of the two.

The bridge where the two stand side by side and talk in episode five. The night view, in which the pavilion and its reflection read as a single mass, is the whole point of the scene, so it is worth going after the sun has fully set. You can look at it from the bank, or walk the wooden corridor inside.

동궁과 월지 경상북도 경주시 원화로 102

The site of a Silla detached palace, long known as Anapji. Walking the loop around the pond, there are a few stretches where the pavilions settle whole onto the water, and the show's Gyeongju night shots came from that shoreline. It is five minutes by car from Woljeonggyo, so the two pair naturally in one evening.

The alley district along Poseok-ro, running beside the outer wall of Daereungwon. Cafes and gift shops built into renovated hanok stand shoulder to shoulder, which is what backs the show's downtown Gyeongju scenes. The car parks fill up quickly, so arriving by local bus or on foot works better.

화랑의 언덕 경상북도 경주시 산내면 내일리 산261-2

A hill well inland from downtown Gyeongju, out toward Sannae-myeon. Sheep graze on grassland dotted with scattered pines, giving the place an air that belongs to neither a period drama nor a modern one, and the show uses it as a counterweight to the downtown scenes. It sits far from the city center, so it is worth setting aside half a day of your Gyeongju itinerary for it.
