It is preserved as found rather than restored, so rooms with peeling wallpaper are still there, and that state matches the film's scenes of withdrawal. The stables and gardens were used as well. This stands in for a bombed Birmingham street. It is really a Victorian commercial quarter left standing in Bradford, where soot-darkened stone buildings run in rows, which is why period productions keep coming back. Offices and studios occupy it now, so walking the street is enough to put you inside the alley from the screen.

The point in central Birmingham where two canals meet. The Shelby waterway scenes were shot here. Narrowboats are still moored along it and pubs and restaurants line the water, so a trip to see a filming location tends to turn into dinner.
