在作物接連枯死、沙塵暴籠罩村鎮的年代，前飛行員庫柏穿過土星旁開啟的蟲洞，去尋找人類可以棲居的行星。不同重力場中的時間流速並不相同，他在那邊花掉一小時，地球上的女兒便老去數年。
去掉太空段落，本片的地球是亞伯達，外星則是冰島。玉米田不是CG，而是劇組在朗維尤一帶真正種下並養大的500英畝作物。曼恩博士的冰之星是斯維納山冰川，艾德蒙茲的星球是馬法波特一帶的黑沙平原。沿冰島南部環島公路走，一天之內就能穿過這兩顆星球。

Svínafellsjökull glacier in Iceland is Mann's ice planet. The conceit that what looks like cloud is in fact a frozen wall came out of this real glacier surface, streaked with black volcanic ash. The Himalayan scenes in Batman Begins were shot on the same ice.
