Songjeong Solbaram Beach in Mijo-myeon, Namhae stands in as the pair's hometown sea. An old pine grove runs the length of the sand, so a few steps from the beach into the shade puts the surf and the wind through the pines on top of each other. The flashback scenes where a summer at eighteen and a summer at thirty fold onto the same spot were shot here. It sits near Namhae's southeastern tip, so it stays uncrowded, and it faces the morning light rather than the sunset.

천하슈퍼 경남 남해군 미조면 송정리 1376-4

Pyeonggyeong, the village in the drama, is really Cheonha village in Songjeong-ri, Mijo-myeon, Namhae. The small neighborhood shop at its center, Cheonha Super, appears repeatedly as the spot where the characters keep running into each other. It amounts to one wooden bench, a drinks fridge and a sun-faded sign, and because villagers actually use it, the lived-in feel on screen was not built for the camera. From the shop it is a few minutes' walk down to the water.

Follow the coast a little further from Cheonha village and you reach Hangdo Mongdol Beach. Rounded stones take the place of sand, so every wave draws out a long rattle as it pulls back. With the breakwater and lighthouse close by, this is where the scenes of the two walking or sitting in silence were shot. There is a campsite beside it, so summer gets busy, and the stones make barefoot walking hard enough that shoes are the better call.

남해전통시장 경남 남해군 남해읍 북변리 246-1

Namhae Traditional Market, in the middle of Namhae town, appears as the everyday space where the characters shop and grab a meal. It sells what the island grows, so the stalls turn over with the seasons. Anchovies caught in the local bamboo weirs and garlic in spring, yuzu in autumn. It trades daily, but it is at its largest on the five-day market days, those ending in a 2 or a 7. A section given over to garlic dishes makes it easy to eat inside the market itself.

구룡포항 경북 포항시 남구 구룡포읍 구룡포리 954-2

The high-school scenes were not shot in Namhae at all but in Guryongpo, Pohang, up in North Gyeongsang. Guryongpo Harbor and a nearby high school carry the characters' eighteenth year. Behind the harbor runs the Guryongpo modern history street, lined with wooden houses built by Japanese fishing settlers during the colonial period, so climbing a single alley gives you the same sense of time the camera found. This is the harbor known for gwamegi and snow crab, and in winter the stalls stretch along the quay.
