The most direct access to the lake is via the town of Panajachel, which sits on the northern shore approximately 50 kilometers west-northwest of Antigua, Guatemala, and serves as the main transport hub for the region. Lanchas — small motorboats — connect Panajachel to the smaller lakeside villages including San Juan La Laguna and San Marcos La Laguna, which appear in wider shots in the film. For the clearest views of the three framing volcanoes — San Pedro, Tolimán, and Atitlán — the northern and northeastern shores offer the most unobstructed sightlines, particularly in the early morning before wind raises surface chop and before cloud descends into the caldera, typically between November and April during the dry season. Altitude sickness is a realistic consideration at 1,562 meters for visitors arriving from sea level; allow at least one day of acclimatization before undertaking boat excursions or lakeside hiking.
