A door that was not there before opens in the basement of a furniture showroom. Beyond it are rooms papered in yellow and corridors under humming fluorescent light, running on with no exit in sight, and whoever steps through loses the way back. Kane Parsons, who built the Backrooms as a YouTube series, directs his first feature for A24, with Chiwetel Ejiofor as showroom owner Clark and Renate Reinsve as Mary.
The low-roofed motel where Kat and Bobby go home after a shift, the 2400 Motel on Kingsway, still rents rooms. The yellow rooms at the heart of the film are the part you cannot visit: production designer Danny Vermette built them across four sound stages, more than 30,000 square feet of wallpaper and carpet that came down when the shoot ended. A Backrooms trip is therefore a tour of the world on this side of the door. The motel and the Coquitlam retail strip that played Clark's furniture store both sit in Metro Vancouver and fit into one day. The city plans four rental towers on the motel site, so a night there is not worth postponing.

The 2400 Motel at 2400 Kingsway in Vancouver stands in as the home of Kat and Bobby, the two young staff at Clark's furniture store. It is a row of single-storey bungalows under low roofs, a shape that reads as slightly off on screen. Vancouver productions have used it for years, among them The X-Files, Smallville and Yellowjackets, and it still takes overnight bookings. The grounds belong to guests, so shoot from the sidewalk unless you are staying. The City of Vancouver bought the property in 1989 and plans four rental towers on the site, so the motel will come down; as of reporting in July 2026 it keeps operating for the time being.

The showroom that plays Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire, the furniture store Clark runs, and the building whose basement door sets the film in motion. A location reference site and a Vancouver-area production newsletter both point to a retail unit at 15 King Edward Street in Coquitlam, though the production has never confirmed the address. The strip sits in the big-box belt along United Boulevard, between the Trans-Canada Highway and the Fraser River, and its tenants turn over often. It is ordinary roadside retail, free to walk up to. The yellow rooms behind the door are not in the building: they were built on four sound stages elsewhere in Vancouver.
