An unemployed would-be writer starts trailing strangers through London for material, until the man he is following turns around and confronts him. Drawn into a burglar's habit of entering flats not to steal but to read the lives inside, he sinks deeper than he meant to, and the scrambled fragments of the story only lock into a single line at the very end. Nolan's first feature, shot on weekends with friends on 16mm black-and-white film.
With a budget of six thousand pounds there were no sets to speak of. The London on screen is simply the one Nolan was living in, and the narrow lanes of Soho and Covent Garden are the stage. Walk them today and the width of the alleys and the height of the signs have barely shifted, so the angles you remember from the black-and-white frames are still there to find.
