A Los Angeles homicide detective, sent to a small Alaskan town where the summer sun never sets, shoots and kills his own partner in the fog. The only witness turns out to be the murder suspect he came to catch, and as the sleepless nights stack up, his judgement and his guilt collapse together.
Set in Alaska, but shot almost entirely in British Columbia. The mountains and water around Squamish and the log booms at Port Alberni are what produced that overcast white-night texture. Both are within a day trip of Vancouver, and in summer you can feel for yourself the thing the film is about, that the night simply does not arrive.

Squamish British Columbia Canada
Squamish, British Columbia, playing the town of Nightmute, the lodge, the police station, the high school, and the funeral were all shot around here. Mountains drop straight down to the water, and the film's closed-in pressure comes directly from that terrain.
Port Alberni British Columbia Canada
Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, the town of Umkumuit where Finch's apartment sits, and the site of the famous chase across floating logs. The timber industry is still here, so log booms really do sit on the water.
Columbia Glacier Valdez Alaska
The Columbia Glacier at Valdez, Alaska, flown low over in the opening aerial shot. It is one of the few sequences actually filmed in Alaska, and you can reach it from Valdez by boat cruise or flightseeing tour.
