Four teenagers from an island town in North Carolina chase a sunken ship and the gold that went down with it. In a place split between the working-class Pogues and the wealthy Kooks, a treasure hunt is also a class fight. Season 5 moves the search to the Mediterranean.
Season 5 moves from the United States to Croatia. The European stretch was shot in the old town of Dubrovnik, and Luza Square and Stradun sit close enough inside the walls to cover on foot in half a day. Lokrum Island needs a boat from the old harbour, so give it a half day of its own. The American base across every season is Charleston, the port city in South Carolina.

Luza Square Dubrovnik Old Town Croatia
The chase through the European stretch of season 5 plays out on this square. It sits at the eastern end of Dubrovnik's walled old town, and the bell tower and Orlando's Column beside it make it recognisable on screen straight away. The city wall tour entrance is close by, so it works as a starting point for a day inside the walls.
Stradun Placa Dubrovnik Old Town Croatia
The main street cutting the old town from east to west. The limestone paving has been worn smooth, so on a clear day it throws the light straight back. The late season chase runs along it and through the alleys on either side, and every stepped lane, the Jesuit Staircase included, branches off from here.
Lokrum Island Dubrovnik Croatia
An island floating just off the old town. Boats run from the old harbour on a fixed timetable, so a late afternoon crossing means worrying about the last one back. The Mediterranean treasure hunt of the late season plays out here, among a ruined monastery, a botanical garden and woods where peacocks live.
Charleston South Carolina United States
The American production base since season 1. Outer Banks is a North Carolina place name in the story, but the filming has always happened around Charleston in South Carolina. Harbour, marshland and old mansions sit inside one city, so the two worlds of the Pogues and the Kooks turn up along the same short route.
