Rick gave up on pop stardom long ago and makes his living singing at weddings. Danny, a boy-band star on the way down, meets him at one of those receptions, and the two stay up all night finishing a song together. The song becomes a hit under Danny's name alone. Setting out to claim the credit he believes is his, Rick ends up putting the life he has built on the line. John Carney, who made Once and Sing Street, shot this music comedy in Dublin.
The photograph worth keeping comes from Ringsend. Stand on the south bank of the Liffey and the two 207-metre Poolbeg chimneys, the tallest structures in Dublin, drop straight into the frame, with the streets where Danny's singing scenes were shot spread out in front of them. Ringsend is two kilometres east of Dame Street, an easy walk past Grand Canal Dock, so the two city stops fit into one morning. Dundrum Town Centre sits further south on the Luas green line, and since it is an ordinary working mall the visit is about matching the scene rather than sightseeing. Walk the river before noon and ride south after lunch.

Dundrum Town Centre holds the film's turn, the moment Rick hears his plagiarised song on the radio for the first time. Paul Rudd told The Irish Times the crew shot in the mall while it was trading, and Irish reviews go as far as naming the sports shop that appears on screen. Opened in 2005 and one of Ireland's largest shopping centres, it is an ordinary working mall, so there is no set to find, only the concourse to walk. The Luas green line runs alongside it, with Balally the closest stop and Dundrum also within walking distance. Drivers get three car parks holding more than 3,000 spaces, under a 2.00 m height limit.
Ringsend Dublin 4 Ireland
Ringsend is the neighbourhood where Nick Jonas's singing scenes as Danny were filmed. John Carney told Ireland's Classic Hits Radio that it was amazing to see Nick Jonas rocking in Dublin, in Ringsend, singing songs. An old port village on the south bank of the Liffey where the Dodder flows in, it lies two kilometres east of the centre, an easy walk out past Grand Canal Dock. The two Poolbeg chimneys across the water rise about 207 metres, the tallest structures in Dublin, and they land in the frame from almost any angle. Ringsend Park, ten and a half hectares of grass around a refurbished stadium, is where to sit down.
Dame Street Dublin 2 Ireland
The city-centre street Rick wanders through. JOE.ie lists Dame Street alongside Dundrum and Ringsend as the film's Dublin locations, and the production said it stayed off tourist stretches like Grafton Street. The street runs from Cork Hill outside City Hall east to College Green in front of Trinity College, with the lanes of Temple Bar immediately to the north. The glass and cast-iron canopy of the Olympia Theatre, jutting out over the footpath, is the easiest landmark to aim for. Walking east from here past Grand Canal Dock links this stop to Ringsend in one line.
