In 1457, a young deposed king, Yi Hong-wi (King Danjong), is exiled to Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol, where Eom Heung-do, a village chief, is ordered to keep watch over him. A historical drama about a man who first sees the king as nothing but a burden, yet ends up guarding the lonely young exile and walking his final road with a loyalty he is willing to die for.
From the pine grove of Cheongnyeongpo where Danjong's loneliness began, to the Seonam Village overlook where the Donggang River curves into the shape of the Korean Peninsula, the film's tragic beauty was all shaped on the real landscapes of Yeongwol in Gangwon Province. Stand before the very waters and cliffs you saw on screen, and the footsteps of a boy king from over 560 years ago quietly come back to life beneath your feet.
Filming Locations
청령포 강원 영월군 남면 광천리
The film's central stage, where the deposed Danjong was exiled. Surrounded by the Seogang River on three sides and walled off by a cliff on the other, this isolated landscape captures the young king's loneliness exactly. Danjong's quarters, the Gwaneumsong pine, and Manghyangtap tower still stand among the pines.
선돌 강원 영월군 영월읍 방절리
A Yeongwol landmark where a 70-meter rock stands tall above a riverside cliff. The scenes carrying the exile procession and the film's tragic mood were completed atop these rugged ridges and sheer cliffs.
영월 장릉 강원 영월군 영월읍 단종로
Danjong's royal tomb and the destination where the film's narrative arrives. As the emotional climax in which Eom Heung-do's loyalty is distilled, the history hall within the tomb grounds tells the story from the Gyeyujeongnan coup to Danjong's death.
선암마을 한반도지형 전망대 강원 영월군 한반도면 옹정리
The Seonam Village overlook, where the S-shaped curve of the Donggang River mirrors the map of the Korean Peninsula. The winding river and vast scenery were used extensively for the film's aerial drone shots.
