The physicist Robert Oppenheimer builds a town in the middle of the desert and builds the bomb. From the day it works he is held by what he has made, and a decade later a closed security hearing pulls his past relationships out one by one. The silence before the blast stays with you longer than the roar.
New Mexico is the centre of this film. The town of Los Alamos was rebuilt at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiú, while much of the interior work was done at the real Los Alamos. Ghost Ranch is where Georgia O'Keeffe painted her red cliffs for a lifetime, so it is worth the drive regardless of the film, and Los Alamos still has the Bradbury Science Museum and the house Oppenheimer lived in. Add the Berkeley campus and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and the trip traces his whole career.

Ghost Ranch Abiquiu New Mexico
Ghost Ranch at Abiquiú, New Mexico, where the entire Los Alamos townsite set was built. It lies about 65 kilometres north of the real Los Alamos, a wide flat under red sandstone cliffs, exactly the ground for a city raised in the middle of a desert. It operates as a retreat centre with lodging and workshops, so you can book a stay.

Los Alamos, New Mexico. Much of the interior work was shot in the real town, and the house the Oppenheimers lived in from 1943 to 1945 still stands on Bathtub Row. The Bradbury Science Museum lays out the Manhattan Project in sequence, so going after the film locks the scenes into place one by one.

The Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey, where Oppenheimer served as director after the war, and where the pondside conversations with Einstein were filmed. The woods and trails behind the Institute are open to the public.
