Two Victorian London magicians, set against each other by an accident on stage, spend their lives trying to destroy one another. One perfects the craft; the other decides what price he is willing to pay. When the hunt for a trick's secret leads to an electrical inventor in Colorado, the story steps past magic altogether.
Every West End stage in the film is actually an old theatre on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles, chiefly the Los Angeles Theatre and the Tower Theatre, both of which you can now see inside on a tour or at an event. Tesla's Colorado Springs laboratory was played by Mount Wilson Observatory, where the view down over the Los Angeles basin from the car park is a destination in itself.

The Los Angeles Theatre in downtown LA, the grand London stage and red auditorium where Angier and Borden perform. Built in 1931, its gilt ornament and grand staircase lobby survive intact; it is not open daily, but tours and hired events get you inside.

The Tower Theatre on Broadway, the other stage used alongside the Los Angeles Theatre to build the film's London theatre district. It has since been converted into a store, so anyone can walk in during opening hours and look up at the ceiling and balcony.
